Augusto Ortega Sidra, Finca Las Asturias, San Agustín, Huila, Colombia (250g)
Pineapple • Ginger • Red Berries | Washed Process | Huila, Colombia | 1680 MASL
Augusto Ortega has been farming Finca Asturias since 1985, on a hillside in San Agustín, Huila. After decades of work and an unwavering commitment to doing things right, Augusto became part of Monkaaba, a project helping to build a more sustainable and autonomous path forward for smallholders who may not otherwise have access to the specialty market without great personal risk.
The producer collective rooted in San Agustín has subsequently grown from six families to over sixty. Monkaaba runs an open quality control lab where any producer can taste their own coffee and get immediate feedback on how to improve it. The results speak for themselves and quality across the collective has risen consistently with younger growers now selling microlots under their own names. Augusto's standing in the community has played no small part in how it has grown and why it works.
The Ortega-Gomez family has been cultivating coffee in San Agustín, one of the most highly-regarded coffee growing areas in Colombia since the earliest days of production there. The quality of this Sidra shines in the cup with dense red fruit layered over classic ginger and pineapple. Our importer put it plainly: it's among the best coffees they offer anywhere worldwide.
The density of this new crop comes through in this Sidra, with the floral ginger and pineapple character of this cultivar grounded by a rich, dark red fruit.
